Abstract Aims Hyperkalaemia is very common in hospitalised patients especially peri-operative settings. It associated with increased length of stay, morbidity and mortality. Here we review the management hyperkalaemia emergency surgery inpatients compared to recommended national guidelines. With identification any gaps, will introduce a new protocol standardize practice as basis our educational intervention. Methods A retrospective observational study adult surgical between July December 2020. 20 K+ >5.5 during their inpatient stay were identified. Data on clinical was extracted from electronic data record handover database analysed. Results Of identified, 13 had mild (5.5-6), 3 moderate (6-6.5) 4 severe (>6.5) hyperkalaemia. Mortality 0 100% K + ≥6.5 received timely treatment line However, there wide variation type given cases not aligning current Additionally, only 40% documented 20% an ECG; recommendation even cases. Conclusions There need standardise align recent, validated guidance. clear easily accessible algorithm reinforced by intervention junior doctors may improve high potassium outcomes. Following this intervention, standard be re-audited.
